GIS and Remote Sensing Laboratory: A Hub for Forest Monitoring and Management

On June 6th, 2023, the GIS and Remote Sensing Laboratory (GeoLab) participated at an exhibition of posters at the university’s library. The event was aimed at second- and third-year undergraduate students who were interested in learning more about the laboratories’ researches and facilities. Our poster at the exhibition was presented by the current fourth-year undergraduate and graduate students who shared the kinds of research activities and equipment on the use of remote sensing and GIS for forest monitoring and management.

The poster highlighted some of the key features of the laboratory, including its use of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) to capture remote sensing images of forest areas. The laboratory also boasts the latest and most sophisticated software for forest analysis, such as ArcGIS Pro.

The current students of GeoLab also demonstrated how to use some instruments like a global positioning system (GPS) and an electronical tree height measuring device (Vertex). These demonstrations were well-received by undergraduate students who were interested in learning more about these tools.

Additionally, the laboratory is internationally mixed, consisting of Japanese, Chinese, and Solomon Islands students who practice their language skills in English. The laboratory is socially friendly with active interaction, engaging in interesting conversations both academic and non-academic when and where necessary.

The GeoLab is an excellent choice for final year undergraduate and first-year graduate students who are interested in forest monitoring and management. The laboratory is full of smiles with a professor who is very friendly, always calm, easy-going and approachable. The laboratory provides an environment that is conducive to learning while being socially engaging.
